World number three Mark Allen sparked fury on social media after asking for a freebie at an event.

The snooker star, 37, took to Facebook to ask for a band or DJ to perform for free at an event and in lieu of cash, promising them to earn "lots of coverage".

The Northern Irish player was subject to mass criticism from fans for his ballsy request just days after he caused controversy during a German Masters win when he threw a ball across the table in anger.

The 2022 UK Championship victor wrote on Wednesday (January 31): "Need a band, singer or DJ to be part of an event I'm running 10th March. Not gonna lie, I'm looking a freebie but you'll be part of an amazing event and you'll get lots of coverage.

"Event being covered by BBC, UTV and World Snooker. Don't all come at me at once." Allen quoted the screenshot of the message and wrote: "Can anyone help? Thanks in advance" as X (formerly known as Twitter) came out in droves to lambast the 37-year-old's request.

One user replied by posting a screenshot of Allen's 2023-24 season prize money of £333,500 while another told him: "As much as I think you're great mate, you're a millionaire, looking for a freebie. Catch a grip."

A third user explained just how audacious his plea was by writing: "Bad craic Mark. Would you ask an electrician, plumber, tiler ect to come and fix something in your house for free? Exactly, so why ask a musician to do their job for free? Exposure doesn’t pay the bills, money does."

However, there were some that seemed interested in the offer but had some demands of their one with one user suggesting: "I'll do it. If you play snooker in my living room for free. Bring your own table" while another said: "Any chance you want to come and do an exhibition in my local club? Not gonna lie, I'm looking for a freebie".

Aware of the flak he received for his request, Allen hit back at his critics after revealing the event is for The Mark Allen Foundation Ltd charity that he launched earlier this month.

"Haters gonna hate," the snooker player said. "Trying to put a charity event on and looking for some freebies and now I'm the devil. I'm very happy asking what I have. No one is being forced here, thanks," he added.
