It's good to check that your Kindle books are fully updated, allowing you to enjoy the best version of the book you're reading. A Kindle update could come with corrections for typos or formatting, or perhaps with new appendixes or bonus content.
So, how do you check to see if your book is fully updated? How do you update your Kindle book? We're going to answer both, along with explaining how you can keep your books automatically updated in the future.
Step 1: Go to Your Content & Devices on Amazon

Firstly, go to Manage Your Content and Devices on your Amazon account and make sure you're in the Content section.
To do this, select Content & Devices or Manage Your Content and Devices from the drop-down list on Accounts & Lists.
To get to this section if you're in Your Account, scroll to Manage content and devices and select Digital content and devices or Content and devices.
Step 2: Check If Any Books Need Updating

Next, scroll through your Kindle books to see if any have a link saying Update Available. If your Kindle books do not have this link, then you've got the latest version of that ebook.
Step 3: Correctly Update Your Kindle Book

Updating your Kindle book will replace your current version with a brand new up-to-date version.
If you incorrectly update your book, then this could mean that you lose any notes, highlights, or other additions you've made on your Kindle for the current version of that book.
So, before you decide to update your ebook, make sure that your Kindle is connected to the internet and also has Whispersync for Books enabled via Settings > Device Options > Advanced Options. Thankfully, you'll also get a prompt from Amazon reminding you to do this before updating.
Whispersync is Amazon's feature that syncs your reading with the related audiobook (if available), but in this scenario it's used to maintain all your settings and notes within a book.
To update your Kindle book, click on Update Available, then Update. The updated ebook should now appear in your Kindle library.
To check to see if the updated version has arrived, go to your library, select Sort, then Recent. The updated ebook should be at the top of your library.
Do Kindle Books Automatically Update?

There is a feature to automatically update your Kindle books, which you can find under the Preferences tab of Manage Your Content and Devices.
There should be a section you can expand called Automatic Book Updates, which does exactly what it says, as long as your Kindle has a wireless connection enabled. Simply set it to On.
Here, you'll also get a message reminding you to enable Whispersync for Books on your Kindle before you do this—it might be more than a little annoying to see any highlights, notes, and reading progress you've made on your Kindle book be reset at any given time.
However, even if you do have Automatic Book Updates enabled, it's still worth checking on your Amazon account from time to time as a book or two might need to be manually updated.
The Most Up-To-Date Version of Your Kindle Book
Updating your Kindle books gives you the cleanest, most correct version of that book, potentially sorting out any issues you had over the text or formatting.
Your Kindle books aren't the only thing that updates on your Kindle. The device itself also undergoes some wonderful software updates, giving you a smoother, more refined, and more personalized version of your trusty e-reader.
